Children and youth

When his disciples were arguing about who was the greatest, Jesus put a child at their center and said “whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”  Children are vital to the First Lutheran community by their presence, their questions, their gifts.   Interested in knowing more about any of the following?  Contact Pastor Kate.

Baptism and Communion

Baptism is for all ages.  Our whole life is for learning what it means that we’re children of God.   Holy Communion is also provided to all ages.  Occasional classes are provided for children and parents to better understand the meaning of these sacraments.

Sunday worship

Children are most welcome at both service times.  Parents feel at ease with children at worship.    There are opportunities to participate as acolytes or readers and to sing with the Children’s choir.  There is a brief sermon for children at the 10:30 worship service.  There’s a craft table in the back of the sanctuary, and childcare center downstairs.

Sundays 9:15-10:15 a.m

Sunday School classes for children to form relationships and learn the Bible, Christian tradition, values and practices, faith, empathy and daily life.  Most classes use curriculum from Augsburg Fortress.  September 11, 2016 children meet teachers; September 18 first class day of class.

Intergenerational Sundays – once a month, instead of class, all ages gather with adults for a fun shared activity such as making sandwiches for people who are homeless, doing music together, or a craft project to help prepare for an upcoming church season.

Thursday Dinner and Arts

Children gather at 5:30pm for  a shared craft opportunity, and then at 6pm a shared meal.  From 6:30-7:30pm, ages 5-12 rehearse with the Children’s Choir.  This group learns more about singing and provides music for worship once a month.  More info here.

Confirmation

The Word, Pizza and Prayer, for 6-9th grades, a shared ministry between FLC and University Lutheran, meets every other Tuesday night from 7-8pm. We learn/study/explore/question the New Testament, enjoy pizza and fruit as part of our dinner, and end in prayer. More info here.
