Worship at First Lutheran
Worship is the foundation of our life at First Lutheran. Every Sunday we gather to praise God, to offer thanks for our blessings, and to pray for those in our community and the world who need support.
Our weekly service focuses on Word and Meal. Everything in the liturgy either leads to or responds to the moments when we encounter God's Word in Scripture and sermon and gather around the table to be nourished by the Holy Communion meal. Following Jesus' example, our worship is inclusive. People of all ages, backgrounds, and orientations who sincerely desire God's blessing are welcome at the Holy Communion table. We invite children to participate in the worship service, which includes a special children's message by the pastor, and to receive Holy Communion. We use a variety of historical and contemporary liturgies that draw from the Lutheran tradition and other traditions that connect us to people who have worshiped God in many times and places. Members of the congregation actively participate in the service by offering prayers, sharing in responsive readings, and singing hymns, psalms, and other music. First Lutheran enjoys a rich musical tradition, supported by an accomplished choir and a 26-rank Casavant organ. The visual arts provide another facet of our worship experience. Members have designed and made seasonal paraments, banners, paintings, and other works of art that inspire spiritual reflection. As we share one another's burdens and joys, we go out into the world refreshed and strengthened to do God's work and serve our neighbors.
