Serving in worship

Worship is not a spectator sport at FLC. Every member of the congregation participates in various roles: Baptism

Assisting Ministers read the lessons, offer prayers and assist in the distribution of holy communion. If you are interested, contact Stephanie Leong.

Acolytes bear the cross and torches which lead the processions and recessions of worship services. They also light candles, assist in distribution of Communion and other key parts of worship, especially baptisms. If you are interested, contact Stephanie Leong.

Altar Guild members work behind the scenes of every worship service. Working in teams, members set the Table and prepare the communion vessels in preparation for Worship. Members are asked to commit themselves to serve approximately every six weeks, either on Saturday or Sunday morning. Their responsibilities include replacing candles, changing altar and ambo paraments, cleaning the baptismal font and refreshing the water, dressing the chalice for the Eucharist, filling the flagon, setting out the bread, and cleaning or changing the worship accoutrements. Contact Stephanie Leong for more information.

Ushers distribute bulletins, escort congregants to their seats, ring the bell, count attendance, operate the P.A. system, and collect the offering. We also need ushers for special services such as memorials. If you are interested, contact Jackie Holmkvist.

Choir. Although the choir performs many fine works from the best artistic traditions of the church, the choir's purpose is not to perform or entertain but rather to lead in worship.

Coffee Hour. While not technically part of worship, we sure do like our coffee, and it's the perfect opportunity to socialize and relax after the concentration of worship. Coffee and goodies are provided by the various Koinonia groups in turn; there is a sign-up chart in the Parish Hall.

Flowers. Each Sunday the altar is graced by beautiful flowers provided by members and friends of the congregation. Often these flowers are dedicated to or in memory of someone special in our lives. Choose your special Sundays and sign up on the flower chart in the Parish Hall. You may provide the flowers in either of the following ways:

  1. Bring flowers from your garden or buy cut flowers and arrange them. Vases and other supplies are under the small sink in the corner of the kitchen.
  2. Order arrangements from a florist and have them delivered.
Include your dedication on the flower chart, or send it by noon on Wednesday, to the office, so it can be included in the Sunday bulletin. Jill Knuth is available to help arrange flowers if you give her a few day's notice.

Congregation. It is not necessary to sign up for anything to participate in worship. Just show up! The congregation takes part in prayers, in singing, and become part of the body of Christ at his invitation. What are you doing next Sunday?
