Tentative Schedule
January – February 2020
We had some wonderful sessions on the Ten Commandments and contemporary issues – such as the use and misuse of religious language in politics, the word “evangelical,” the meaning of faith and purpose of church, the uses of wealth, vocation as going beyond paid employment, how we relate to parents and partners.
March / Lent 2020
We’ll step outside of our religion and welcome some guests – such as a rabbi and representative of Baha’i’ – who will address these or similar questions:
1. What’s your religion? (And, what do you think of the word ‘religion?’)
2. How did you get involved in it? What keeps you involved?
3. When someone is new to your religion, what do they learn? What are 2-3 of the most important teachings, values, practices?
4. What’s a common misconception about your religion, or something you wish more people knew about it?
5. What are the challenges your religious community faces, especially here in the Silicon Valley?
6. What’s something about Christianity (or Lutheranism?) that’s puzzling, strange, disturbing, or interesting to you? What do you think we might have in common?
We’ll go into the Christian understanding about who God is and how we relate to God, using the Large Catechism on the Apostles Creed.
April / Easter Season 2020
We’ll welcome some guests for our Centennial and finish up with a focus on religious practices such as prayer, baptism and communion.
