Lent 2018
“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself” – John 12:31
“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself” – John 12:31
It’s a season: forty days beginning with Ash Wednesday and leading to Easter, patterned after various forty day (or year) stories in scripture, such as the time Noah spent in the ark or Israel wandering in the wilderness on the way to the Promised Land. The word Lent means “Spring.” During this season, we turn in trust to a God who gives new life.
Many people give something up for Lent. Besides fasting, traditional disciplines include “alms giving” or showing care to those in need, and giving attention to our prayer life. Lent originated as a time to prepare people for baptism at the Easter Vigil (March 31, 2018), and if you are curious about this possibility, please contact a pastor.
At worship on the final Sunday in Lent, we’ll hear Jesus say “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” In his crucifixion he won’t repel but actually connect with people – who know exclusion and weakness – as we might see in Chagall’s Exodus (above and below). It’s good news for a divided world: God’s mercy brings us together.
Thursdays during Lent, February 22 to March 22, 2018
If you like, stay around for choir practice. Kids rehearse from 6:30-7:30; Adults rehearse from 7:30-9pm.
The people around FLC represent a variety of perspectives, backgrounds, experience with faith. Each Thursday, one person will share their responses to some of the following questions, with time for discussion afterwards:
What has drawn / does draw you to Jesus? What has been your path / route towards him? (in religion, interests, work, experiences) What have been your big obstacles, struggles, questions along the way? Who are 1 or 2 (influential, challenging, odd) people you’ve met because of being drawn to Jesus? Share a reading, some art, music that’s important to your spiritual path.
