This Fall, a variety of opportunities will be available between worship services, including Sunday School for children, occasional intergenerational events, informal conversation and welcome to newcomers in the Parlor, and of course, Adult Forum. More information can be found on our worship page on the website.
Adult Forum meets in the library, from 9:15-10:15. We dig deep with an open spirit into theology, scripture, societal issues and ethics. The childcare center is open downstairs during this time. Grab a cup of coffee on the way in, if you like, and join us!
Don Knuth on the Biblical Prophets
Who were these ancient Hebrew prophets and what do we make of their writings today? Don Knuth will lead these discussions, based on his book 3:16 Bible Texts Illuminated. We’ll look at four prophets:
September 18 – Jeremiah
September 25 – Isaiah
October 2 – Amos
October 9 – Zephaniah
Future Forum Plans
October 16 – Pastor Bernt Hillesland will provide an introduction to how the 500 year anniversary of the Reformation is being observed by Lutherans around the world, and some thoughts and plans on our own observance, especially around the theme of calling or vocation.
October 23 – We welcome Dr. Alicia Vargas, Associate Professor of Multicultural and Contextual Studies from our local ELCA seminary, PLTS in Berkeley. Dr. Vargas will talk about trends and prospects for the future in seminary and our national church.
October 30 – “Have I got a proposition for you.” Just before we go to the polls, Joe Haletky will provide information and relevant Lutheran public policy / social statements.
November 6 – FLC member interviews. On this All Saints Sunday when we remember how we are knit together into one fellowship, we’ll hear two of our own “saints” talk about their own lives and experience of faith.
November 13 – the FLC council (Becky Wilrich hosting) invites us into some conversation about volunteering and vocation, church involvement, pitfalls such as burnout, and some work to develop guidelines and better practices.
November 20 – Luther, Leipzig, and Loving Neighbors: Encouraging a discussion of FLC’s vision to “learn and know Christ in our neighbors”, Joyce Rice and Mary Gundelach will share their experience of visiting Leipzig last June during its annual Bachfest.
November 27 – On this first Sunday in Advent, we’ll hear about the work of Bright Stars of Bethlehem, which promotes the many outreach ministries of Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem that are serving the educational, medical, professional and spiritual development needs of people living in Palestine.
