Music
Fostering a musical culture of rich beauty, wide participation and joyful variety in praise of God.
In Lutheran spiritual tradition, faith is musical in character: joyful, expressive, liberating.
Martin Luther’s teachings were spread through popular songs, some his own compositions. He encouraged the whole congregation to sing at worship, when they were used to just being listeners. Lutheran composers such as J.S. Bach have been important to music around the world.
At FLC we are drawn to the rich history, variety and practice of music, exploring different ways it can be used to enhance worship and community life.
Our organist and director of music is Jung Jin Kim.
We welcome a variety of musical expressions, interests and skill levels
First Lutheran Choir
Our accomplished adult choir supports the congregation in song and enriches worship with a diverse offering of sacred choral music. Participants are always learning, and find that involvement in choir is a meaningful way to experience worship. They rehearse during the school year on Thursdays from 7-8:30pm. We can accommodate those who are only able to commit for a limited time.
Children’s Music
Under the direction of Jung Jin Kim and Margaret Marshall, they sing at events such as Lucia and during Advent, and often combine music with drama.
Cantors
Lead hymn singing and chanting at worship.
Ensembles
Duets and solos, electric and acoustic guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bells and everything from Baroque to Celtic to Gospel. Children and youth have often been involved in these ensembles.
Pickup Choir
About once a month during the school year and occasionally during the Summer, all who show up at 9:20am Sunday morning rehearse to sing at the 10am service, without need of additional rehearsals.
Listening
At the end of worship services, many of us like to stay seated and take in the organ postlude. We have a 26-rank instrument built by Casavant Frères of Québec. We also have a 3-stop continuo organ built by Bond organ builders of Oregon.
