This year, our Christmas Eve 8 PM service will follow the tradition of Lessons and Carols. Originating in the Anglican church in the late 19th century, this cherished tradition weaves together Scripture readings that recount the story of salvation—from the Fall to the birth of Christ—with carols and anthems that illuminate each passage. It has become a beloved way for communities around the world to enter more deeply into the mystery and joy of the Incarnation.
Accordingly, we will be singing a collection of carols under the overarching theme “Come Now to Bethlehem,” which retells the story of our Lord’s birth. My hope is that, in this joyful season, these beloved carols will help make the miracle of Christ’s birth feel more vivid and deeply felt in our hearts. As each of us, in our own way, makes our pilgrimage to the Babe lying in the manger, may we refocus our hearts and minds and listen anew to the invitation: “Come Now to Bethlehem.”
In preparing the repertoire, I intentionally chose music that even those who join at the last minute—such as students returning home for the break—can easily follow. The accompaniments are rich, but the choir parts use familiar carol melodies. We are especially excited to be joined by members of the Chamber Orchestra. – Jung Jin
